MOSCOW (Sputnik) The contamination was discovered near the US town of Fayetteville in a stream that flows a few miles away from a drinking water treatment facility, the study conducted by University of Missouri toxicologist Susan Nagel found.

According to the report published in the Science of the Total Environment journal, it was unclear whether the contamination entered into drinking water sources. Nagel concluded that an additional in-depth analysis of the facility and neighboring sites is urgently needed.

The practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has been repeatedly slammed by environmental activists and some policymakers, who claim that fracking leads to water contamination.
