Russian Paratroopers, CSTO Military to Hold Drills in Arctic in April
The Chechen combat unit conducted military training in the Arctic. They landed on an ice floe and made 80-mile battle march, destroying command posts of an imaginary enemy.

Following the training, the soldiers were expected to attend a lecture on the basics of survival at the North Pole, but it had to be canceled.

After the Arctic sea ice pack cracked, a floe — on which the airfield used by the soldiers was located —broke away and the men found themselves surrounded by faults in the ice.

Russian correspondent Mikhail Fedotov was among those trapped in the Arctic. He reported by phone that the group would soon have to find a new location for the construction of the flight strip and move the camp there. According to him, their camp lacks fuel and food, while the measure could take about a week.

"Flying Squad" is a combat group of Chechen special forces. Before the expedition to the Arctic, they had been trained in a special program, developed jointly with the Russian Geographical Society. The group has unique equipment, which allows fighters to make parachute jumps from a height of six thousand meters and precisely land in a certain place.
