National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ryan Frigo said that video from a train that crashed killing two people in the US state of Pennsylvania on Sunday revealed construction equipment on the track.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Video from a train that crashed killing two people in the US state of Pennsylvania on Sunday revealed construction equipment on the track, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator Ryan Frigo told at a press conference.

"The [forward-facing train] video shows that there was construction equipment on the track and work train equipment on the track immediately adjacent to the Amtrak train’s track," Frigo told reporters in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on Monday.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the train and the construction equipment were authorized to be on the track.

US Federal Investigators Recover Data Recorder From Amtrak Train Crash
An NTSB signals investigator will look into whether positive train control, or PTC, a computerized speed-limiting system intended to prevent train derailments and collisions, was activated during the crash, Frigo noted.

Frigo said that investigators had determined the train was travelling at 106 miles per hour — below the 110-mile per hour speed limit for that stretch of track — when the engineer activated the emergency brake, five seconds before impact.

Investigators still have to examine the train’s braking equipment and information from the event data recorder. Initial examinations of the locomotive and passenger cars on Monday found no anomalies, Frigo added.
