The announcement about the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria made by Russian President Vladimir Putin was a clever military trick, German newspaper Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten wrote.

Following his statement, deluded terrorists went on the offensive and were trapped. As result, the Syrian army managed to liberate Palmyra and inflict a heavy defeat to Daesh, the German newspaper stated.

According to the newspaper, the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria was a complete surprise to many foreign observers.

"Depending on their position, they have suggested that this was either a Russian victory over Islamic State and Al-Nusra Front, or Moscow's capitulation in front of the terrorists," the article said.

Making the announcement, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a clever move and thus killed two birds with one stone. On the one hand, he managed to disorient terrorists, and on the other he supported the Syrian army by the liberation of Palmyra and inflicted a serious blow to the Islamist militants.

Syrian armed forces recaptured the historic city from jihadist militants last week with air support from Russia. During their 10-month control of the city, Islamists destroyed multiple ancient treasures and booby-trapped the ruins.
