Kremlin Says No New Information on Possibility of Swapping Savchenko

Kremlin is not going to exchange Nadezhda Savchenko in the near future, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — There is no new information on the possibility of exchanging Ukrainian national Nadezhda Savchenko, sentenced for 22 years in prison by a Russian court for her involvement in the killing of two Russian reporters in Ukraine, for Russian nationals, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

Earlier in the day, Russia's Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said he considered Savchenko's exchange possible in case it helps to rescue "good and honest people" captured by Kiev forces.

"I have nothing to add to what we said earlier in the week. There is no new information," Peskov told reporters, commenting on the Savchenko case.

On Tuesday, the Kremlin said the cases of Viktor Bout and Konstantin Yaroshenko, Russian nationals held in US prisons illegally, were discussed at the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Secretary of State John Kerry last week.

However, Moscow had no information on reports that the two Russian detainees could be swapped for Savchenko, who had been convicted of directing artillery fire that killed Russian journalists Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin in eastern Ukraine on June 17, 2014.
