WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — It is too early for the United States to assess how the Syrian army’s recent victory over the Daesh will affect the political reconciliation process between the country’s government and opposition, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Monday.

"It is too soon to know the degree to which the Palmyra [in Syria] operation is going to affect it [peace talks]," Kirby stated.

The United States, Kirby noted, is unsure if and how the Syrian government’s victory over the Daesh at Palmyra would affect the political process other than giving Damascus more confidence.

Kirby added that the United States welcomes the fact that the Daesh has been driven out of Palmyra especially considering how the terrorist group decimated the city’s heritage sites.

On Sunday, the Syrian army, supported by militias and Russia’s air force, recaptured the historic city of Palmyra, which for about a year was under the control of the Daesh. The terror group is outlawed in the United States, Russia and many countries.
