As Daesh terrorists are losing ground in the Middle East, they may try to show their strength by organizing attacks in Europe, the head of the German Federal Criminal Police warned.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — New attacks may strike Europe amid high terrorist threat, as Daesh loses positions in Syria and Iraq, the head of the German Federal Criminal Police said Friday.

"Europe has long been in the sphere of influence of the Islamist propaganda. The fact that the so-called 'Islamic State' [Daesh] is weakened in Syria and Iraq adds up to that. That is why terrorists are under pressure and they need large-scale actions to draw attention and demonstrate power," Holger Munch told the Bild newspaper.

Therefore, Daesh activated its calls for terror attacks against "infidels" in Europe, Munch added.

"This means the level of threat in Europe remains high, new terrorist acts can not be excluded," he said.

On Tuesday, two suicide blasts hit the Brussels' Zaventem international airport and an explosion shook the Maelbeek metro station, killing at least 31 people and injuring over 300. Daesh, outlawed in many countries including Russia and the United States, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
