More Sanctions Should Be Imposed on Iran For Latest Ballistic Missile Test
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — A series of ballistic missile tests conducted by Iran in recent months do not violate the UN Security Council resolution endorsing a nuclear deal in July, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo said in a letter to the Council.

"Security Council resolution 2231 does not prohibit legitimate and conventional military activities, nor does international law disallow them," Khoshroo wrote in the letter provided to the media on Thursday. "Iran's recent ballistic missile test launches were part of ongoing efforts of its armed forces to strengthen its legitimate defense capabilities."

Earlier in March, Iranian state media reported that the country’s Revolutionary Guard Corps carried out ballistic missile launches as one of the last steps in verifying the capabilities of Iranian-produced missiles.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, thus, reiterates that there is no basis for the raising of this issue in the Security Council," Khoshroo stated.

The nuclear agreement reached last July between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries removed most sanctions against Tehran, however, the United States has since imposed a unilateral sanctions targeting the Iran’s missile programs.

The unilateral US sanctions effectively deny access to the international banking system to individuals, businesses or organizations that are involved in Iran’s missile program.
