On Tuesday evening, as monuments and buildings around the globe were illuminated in the colors of Belgium’s red, black, and yellow flag in solidarity with the victims of the Brussels attacks, One World Trade center, joining the tribute, chose the wrong colors.

Eiffel Tower Lights Up in Colors of Belgium’s Flag
Earlier in the day, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the 408-foot spire on the tower would be lit to join other structures, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

“Tonight, One World Trade Center will be displayed in black, yellow and red as we stand in solemn solidarity with the people of Belgium, just as they have done for us in the past,' Cuomo said in a statement.

After dark, however, it appeared to be done up in the colors of the American flag.

On social media, photographers and people viewing the tower argued whether the colors seemed closer to red, yellow, and black up close. Others insisted that it was clearly red, white, and blue.

A spokeswoman for the governor's office told the New York Times that initially there were some difficulties in getting the lights to display correctly, but that “shortly after dusk” the blue had been corrected to appear more black.

Before the lighting, a Port Authority spokesman told the Times that “10 percent white light” would be used to portray the black portion of the flag.

The Empire State Building remained dark, “in sympathy for the lives lost in Brussels,” according to the building’s Twitter account.
