United Nations delivered humanitarian aid for some 56,000 people in western Syria's settlement of Houla, a spokesperson for UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, sent a humanitarian convoy to deliver aid for dozens of thousands of people in Houla.

"On Tuesday, we delivered food, nutrition supplies and hygiene kits for some 56,000 people in Al Houla, Homs. This was the first of several planned deliveries to reach a total of 71,000 people," the spokesperson said.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting several opposition factions and militant groups. The conflict has significantly damaged the country's economy and caused a humanitarian disaster

According to the United Nations, about 4.6 million of people are in need of unconditional, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access in the crisis-torn country.
