The Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland announced on Wednesday about his intention to resign from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

EDINBURGH (Sputnik), Mark Hirst — Scotland’s most senior prosecutor, the Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland announced on Wednesday about his intention to resign from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), Scotland’s prosecution service.

"It has been a real privilege to serve as Lord Advocate, leading Scotland’s prosecution service and providing independent legal advice to the Scottish Government. However, after nine years as a Law Officer – the last five as Lord Advocate — I have decided it is the right time to step down and do other things," Mulholland said in a statement published on prosecutor's office website.

Later in the day, Robert Forrester, spokesman for the Justice for Megrahi committee, which accuses COPFS of perversion of the course of justice and perjury in the case of investigation into the trial of Libyan Abdelbaset Megrahi, told Sputnik that Mulholland would be remembered for "negative and regressive influence" on prosecution service. Megrahi was convicted of the 1988 terrorist attack, in which Pan Am Flight 103 was downed by a bomb over the southern Scottish town of Lockerbie.

Forrester added that the prosecutor had shown himself more interested in asserting and protecting the power rather than public interests.

COPFS spokesman Nick Rougvie told Sputnik that Mulholland's decision was not related to any activities or comments of the committee.

The Justice of Megrahi committee includes Professor Noam Chomsky, journalist John Pilger, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a large number of globally known political figures, journalists, writers and relatives of victims of the Pan Am Flight 103 allegedly downed by Megrahi, who aim to challenge the conviction.
