WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A US-led coalition airstrike has targeted Daesh chemical facilities in the city of Heeth in western Iraq, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Steve Warren said in a briefing on Monday.
"We believe the strike in Heeth probably had some chemical capability associated with it," Warren stated. "There was some chemical infrastructure associated with that Heeth strike we did on [March] 17, and we believe was very effective."
On March 17, two airstrikes near Heeth destroyed an Islamic State headquarters and a large terrorists’ tactical unit, along with a tunnel and a rocket position, according to the US Central Command.
In February, CIA Director John Brennan said that Islamic State had used chemical weapons in Syria and Iraq, and had capabilities to produce small amounts of mustard gas or chlorine gas and possibly export it to the Western countries.
The Islamic State, also known as Daesh, is a terrorist group outlawed in the United States, Russia and in numerous other countries. The infamous group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq, and declared an Islamic caliphate on territories under its control.
