Lavrov-Kerry-Steinmeier Meeting in Moscow on March 23 Not Planned - Source

A source in the Russian Foreign Ministry said that joint meeting between Russian, US and German top diplomats in Moscow on March 23 is not on the agenda as they have different working schedules in the Russian capital on that day.

GENEVA (Sputnik) — It is not a coincidence that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is due to meet his US counterpart John Kerry at the end of the intra-Syria talks in Geneva, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Monday.

On March 23-24, during the last days of the peace talks in Geneva, Kerry is expected to visit Moscow to meet Lavrov to discuss Syrian settlement process.

"We are looking with great interest at the visit to Moscow of John Kerry and meeting with Lavrov. Nothing is a coincidence here, it's all interconnected," de Mistura told reporters.

He added that there was no "plan B" for the negotiations between the parts of the Syrian conflict.

Earlier in the day, Bashar Jaafari, the head of the official Damascus' delegation to the Geneva peace talks, said that the meeting between Lavrov and Kerry would be "very important."

The current stage of proximity negotiations between the Syrian opposition and the government's delegation kicked off on March 14 and is expected to wrap up on March 24.

The government delegation is participating in the negotiations along with three Syrian opposition delegations: the Riyadh-backed High Negotiations Committee, a delegation formed after Moscow and Cairo rounds of Syrian talks and a delegation formed at the Hmeimim air facility in Syria.
