Bulgarians Rally Against Construction of Refugee Camp in Kresna

Some 1,000 residents of Bulgaria's Kresna, led by mayor Nikolay Georgiev, marched through the town, protesting against plans to turn a former military base located near the town into a refugee camp, according to local media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Residents of the southwestern Bulgarian town of Kresna protested on Monday against the proposed construction of a refugee camp near the town, local media reported.

According to the Bulgarian Standart newspaper, some 1,000 residents of Kresna, led by mayor Nikolay Georgiev, marched through the town, protesting against plans to turn a former military base located near the town into a refugee camp.

The newspaper added that the residents were ready to continue their protests until Sofia gave them assurances that refugees would not be relocated to the camp near Kresna.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty.
