WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Obama is expected to travel to Cuba for a two-day visit in the wake of his US-Cuba normalization policy. Obama will be the first sitting US president to go to Cuba since Calvin Coolidge, 88 years ago in 1928.
"The delegation, comprised of members of the National Security Council staff, arrived in Cuba on Thursday and departed on Friday. While there, they met with Cuban Government officials to discuss details of the President’s State Visit and to review the ongoing process of normalizing relations between the United States and Cuba," the statement reads.
It was added in the statement that the delegation was headed by Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes.
Relations between Washington and Havana began to improve after Obama announced in December 2014 a historic change in US policy, including the loosening of the congressionally mandated trade and travel embargo on Cuba.
