UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution, extending the mandate for the organization’s Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until June 15 in order to help the country form the Government of National Accord.

"[The resolution] decides to extend until 15 June 2016 the mandate of UNSMIL, as set out in paragraph 12 of resolution 2238 (2015), under the leadership of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General [Martin Kobler]," the text of the resolution, initially proposed by the United Kingdom, said.

The resolution also requests UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to report within 60 days following consultations with the Libyan authorities on recommendations for UNSMIL’s support to the Libyan transition process.

Libya has been in crisis since the 2011 overthrow of long-term leader Muammar Gaddafi and the subsequent civil war. There are currently two governments in Libya: the internationally-recognized Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress. The two sides came to an agreement on December 17, paving the way to the formation of the Government of National Accord.
