MOSCOW (Sputnik) Several coaches of an Amtrak train with over 140 people on board derailed in the US state of Kansas early Monday, the US passenger train network operator Amtrak said in a press release.

"Just after midnight CT [05:00 GMT], Amtrak Southwest Chief Train 4, operating from Los Angeles to Chicago, derailed several coaches approximately 20 miles west of Dodge City, Kan.," Amtrak stated on its website.

The train was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago with 128 passengers and 14 crew on board.

"Local emergency responders provided on-site response, with approximately 11 passengers transported to Western Plains Hospital in Dodge City. The Red Cross and other relief agencies are on-site providing assistance to those passengers," Amtrak said.

The cause of the incident is yet unknown and an investigation is underway.

On May 12, 2015, an Amtrak train derailed near Philadelphia, killing eight passengers and injuring more than 200. As a result, the Amtrak service between New York City and Washington, DC was suspended for six days.
