Preserving Syria's territorial integrity is a critically important issue for the majority of states taking part in the process to settle the country's crisis, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Peskov said that the international community is actively exchanging views on possible options for a political settlement of the crisis in Syria but only the Syrian people should decide on the future political system and leadership of the country.
"Of course, it is a cornerstone issue for many countries — for the vast majority of states, for Russia in the first instance — to preserve the territorial integrity of Syria, we believe it is critically important for the entire region," Peskov said.
Last month, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow would support the establishment of a federal republic in Syria if the Syrians themselves decided that that is what is best for their country.
