The UN continues its efforts on the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor, Jan Egeland, special advisor to the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, said Wednesday.
GENEVA (Sputnik) — Last month, the UN’s World Food Program said that all pallets with aid for Deir ez-Zor either missed their target or were damaged.
“World Food Program is systematically working to overcome all of the obstacles to be able to do airdrops to Deir ez-Zor,” Egeland said.
He expressed hope that the United Nations would to be able to reach the majority of besieged areas in Syria in the near future.
On January 15, the Russian military announced the start of a humanitarian operation in Syria to help people trapped in extremist-besieged towns, primarily to the government-held city of Deir Ez-Zor where a population of 200,000 is believed to be at risk of starvation. The supplies are being airlifted by the Syrian Air Force.
