KIEV (Sputnik) — Savchenko is suspected of helping to direct artillery fire near the eastern Ukrainian city of Lugansk on June 17, 2014, that led to the death of two Russia journalists, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin. Savchenko denies all the allegations.
Savchenko, 34, is facing up to 25 years in prison if convicted. The sentencing by a Russian court in the southern Russian Rostov region has been scheduled for March 21-22.
"Today, during a peaceful rally, which took place near the Russian consulate, some activists started throwing eggs at the consulate building and toward law enforcement officers and other participants of the rally. Ignoring the law enforcement officers' remarks, activists tried to break through the cordon and the military patrol. In order to stop violations of public order, which could transform into riots, law enforcement officers used special means in the form of gas," the statement at the police Facebook page reads.
