Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi will discuss Syrian and North Korean issues on March 11 in Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Wang will officially visit Moscow on March 10-11 at the invitation of Lavrov.

"The diplomats will discuss a wide range of actual items on the bilateral and international agenda with an emphasis on key issues of Russia-China cooperation… The sides will exchange views on pressing issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula and efforts in settling the Syrian crisis," the ministry's statement reads.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed that Wang's visit to Moscow would indeed take place.

He stressed that China and Russia were strategic partners, adding that Beijing hopes that their bilateral relations would develop in light of the complex changes taking place both globally and regionally.

Moscow and Beijing currently cooperate within existing economic and banking projects, in an effort to increase bilateral trade, including the China-proposed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the BRICS New Development Bank, the Silk Road infrastructure fund, and the China-Russia Expo.

Recent tensions on the Korean Peninsula over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs have called for coordinated Russian and Chinese positions, as both states seek to maintain regional stability.

Both Moscow and Beijing would like to see the political crisis in Syria, which has been mired in a violent civil war, be resolved by peaceful means. China welcomed the Russian-US agreement on the cessation of hostilities between the Syrian government and the opposition, as it is seen as a way to promote the intra-Syrian talks, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.
