Following the powerful earthquake, some areas of Japan's territory shifted by about five meters closer to the US. The maximum shift of 6.4 meters is registered on Osika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture.

Meanwhile, the drift continues in the northeast of the island of Honshu. The prefectures of Miyagi and Iwate have shifted over the last year by ten centimeters.

Experts also registered vertical soil vibrations as a result of the earthquake. In some areas, the soil went down by one meter, but has started to return to its previous level in recent years.

According to experts of the Office, the soil in the affected areas of the northeast of Japan is expected to fully return to its previous state in the next few decades.
