Kirby: US Unable to Confirm North Korea Launched Missile Shots
19:54 GMT 03.03.2016 (Updated: 10:47 GMT 06.08.2022) The United states is unable to independently confirm the reports of the launch of several short-range missiles by Pyongyang early on Thursday, US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in a press briefing.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun stated as quoted by the South Korean Yonhap news agency that missiles were fired from the North Korean Wonsan naval base at about 10:00 a.m. local time on Thursday (08:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday).
“I have seen the reports of these missile shots that they [North Korea] allegedly took. I am actually not in a position right now to independently confirm that they actually did that,” Kirby stated on Thursday.
The reported launch comes after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Wednesday introducing sanctions against Pyongyang.
The sanctions came in response to Pyongyang’s January hydrogen bomb test, as well as the launch, a month later, of a long-range rocket to allegedly place a satellite into orbit, in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.
