WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States has seen a decrease in airstrikes against the civilian population as well as opposition groups in Syria amid the cessation of hostilities deal, but is concerned about reports of tank and artillery attacks, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said during a press briefing on Wednesday.

“In recent days we have seen an overall reduction in airstrikes against Syrian opposition and civilians,” Earnest stated. “However, we are concerned about reports that the Syrian regime has engaged in tank and artillery attacks against civilians near places like Latakia, Homs and Hama, and around Damascus.”

Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria on February 22. The accord took effect on Saturday, generally holding across the country despite reported minor violations.

The cessation of hostilities does not apply to designated terrorist organizations operating in Syria, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front, a group affiliated with al-Qaeda. Both groups are banned in Russia.
