WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Air Force is trying to solve a serious shortage of qualified aircraft mechanics, or maintainers by using younger, less qualified staff to do more senior jobs, Air Mobility Command Chief General Carlton Everhart said, according to the Air Force Times.

"There's always a requirement in deployment to have very highly skilled folks out there," Everhart stated, according to the report on Monday. "What if I happen to have a highly skilled person with someone who needs training and pair them out in the desert?"

Everhart was speaking at a media roundtable at the Air Force Association's Air Warfare Symposium, the Air Force Times, an official publication of the US Air Force, said.

"[T]he overstretched and undermanned Air Force struggles to overcome its shortage of experienced aircraft maintainers, " the report added.

The Air Mobility Command is required at present to send experienced maintainers, such as crew chiefs with "five" and "seven" level skill ratings, overseas to US Central Command bases.

However, under the new plan the Air Mobility Command could deploy more "three" level mechanics and pair them with more experienced crew, Everhart concluded.
