A purported Russian citizen has survived last week’s northeastern Mexico prison riot where at least 49 prisoners had died, the Russian Consulate in Mexico said Saturday.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Elena Gulyakova was reportedly caught in the crosshairs of the February 11 Topo Chico prison riot in Monterrey, in which three officials were charged with murder and abuse of authority. After contacting fellow citizens, the Russian Consulate has learned that Gulyakova suffered "serious psychiatric disorders."

"There is speculation that she had long since obtained Mexican citizenship. The consulate is making every effort to find the truth and assist our compatriot," Consul Dmitry Bolbot told RIA Novosti.

Bolbot said it was unclear on what charges Gulyakova was serving a sentence at Topo Chico, adding that unconfirmed reports alleged that she may have broken several store windows.

Gulyakova was reportedly a figure skater. After suffering health complications, attempts to return her to Russia failed because she had no relatives left there.
