KIEV (Sputnik) Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin has sent his letter of resignation to the presidential administration, Presidential spokesman Sviatoslav Tseholko said Friday.

“Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin wrote a letter of resignation. Today it arrived at the presidential administration. I saw it myself,” Tseholko said on his Twitter account.

Earlier this week, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko said in a statement he had asked Shokin to resign from his post.

US Department of State praised Poroshenko’s intention to replace Shokin, stating it showed how serious Kiev was about implementing reforms.

The Petro Poroshenko Bloc in the Ukrainian parliament said it considered the work of the government in 2015 unsatisfactory, and supported the vote to dissolve the government.

Poroshenko also called for resignation of Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk, but the parliament failed to pass a resolution of no-confidence on the issue.
