MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, the Austrian Interior Ministry announced that Vienna would introduce tougher controls at 12 checkpoints along the country’s southern border in a bid to deter an unprecedented migrant inflow, with setting daily entry quotas at each of the checkpoints.

"Any government must take decisions depending on the reality it is responsible in its own country. This is what we have done, and I believe that we have taken steps that Germany is yet to take," the Austrian chancellor told the Kurier newspaper in an interview published Wednesday.

Faymann also called for preparing "tougher border measures" in case the EU-Turkey deal worth over $3.3 billion on tackling migration failed.

EU leaders are set to discuss the implementation of the migration plan at the summit scheduled to take place in Brussels on February 18-19.
