Middle East Quartet Meets in Munich
MUNICH (Sputnik) – The Quartet on the Middle East will prepare a report on the situation in Israel and Palestine, and will include recommendations for international talks on a two-state solution, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Friday.

"The quartet will prepare a report on the situation on the ground, including the recommendations that will help inform the international discussions on the best way to advance the two state solution," Mogherini said after a meeting of the quartet on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The United Nations, Russia, the European Union and the United States form the Middle East Quartet, which has been mediating the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Mogherini: Israel, Palestine Invited to Join Middle East Quartet Talks
Mogherini did not clarify when the report would be ready, but added that work on it would start immediately.

"The quartet underscored that both sides must swiftly demonstrate new policies and actions of genuine commitment to two state solution in order to rebuild trust and avoid a cycle of escalation. It emphasized that a robust Palestinian economy and enhanced government capacity will serve as a cornerstone of Palestinian state," Mogherini stressed.

According to the official, the quartet reiterated that significant steps "consistent with the transition and contemplated by prior agreements" were needed to stabilize the situation and reverse negative trends, as the "status quo is not sustainable."

Palestinians seek diplomatic and economic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, and the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government does not recognize the State of Palestine as an independent diplomatic entity.

Almost 200 people, both from Israel and Palestine, have been killed in the latest wave of violence in the region which began in September.
