MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Currently, Greece is implementing a program of construction of five centers for hosting and registering refugees on country's islands of Chios, Kos, Leros, Lesbos and Samos.
According to CNN Greece, the protesters gathered near the town hall to demand the cancellation of the center's construction.
During the weekend, clashes broke out in different parts of Kos between police and residents, who opposed the construction of the hot spot.
Europe is struggling to find a solution to a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The EU border agency Frontex detected over 1.83 million illegal border crossings in 2015, in contrast to some 283,000 in 2014.
