Russia Providing Military Aid Only to Legitimate Syrian Authorities - Envoy

Moscow is not providing any military assistance in the fight against terrorists to any Syrian opposition group "on the ground," Russian Ambassador to Syria Alexander Kinshchak said.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — The envoy noted that Russia could only propose the Syrian leadership on the distribution of the humanitarian aid.

"Russia is providing military assistance only to the government of Syria. We do not provide weapons to anyone ‘on the ground’ and do not sponsor anyone," Kinshchak told RIA Novosti in an interview.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting multiple opposition factions and terrorist groups, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front.

Russia considers President Bashar Assad to be the legitimate Syrian authority and has launched an air campaign in Syria on September 30 following a request from Assad.

Moscow has also been providing the beleaguered Syrian civilian population with humanitarian aid.
