The Romanian hacker who exposed Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server for government business while she was Secretary of State will waive extradition this month so he can face trial in the United States.

Marcel Lehel Lazar, known online as "Guccifer," has been in a Romanian prison since his January 2014 arrest. He is currently serving a four-year sentence for hacking into the email accounts of Romanian government officials.

In a phone interview with the Smoking Gun, Lazar, 43, said that he will not fight efforts by the State Department to extradite him during an upcoming February 17 hearing.

"I don't oppose. I go there to United States to fight. I know what I did and this is okay with me," Lazar said.

If extradited, he will face trial in an Alexandria, Virginia, federal court, where he was indicted in June for fraud, obstruction of justice, cyberstalking, identity theft, and unauthorized access of a protected computer.

Lazar said that following his arrest, he agreed to speak with FBI and Secret Service agents at the Romanian prison, and he detailed his illegal activities.

In late-2012, Lazar began a hacking spree that infiltrated the email accounts of the Bush family and their friends, as well as numerous US military officials and British politicians, among other high-profile people.

In March 2013, Lazar hacked into the AOL account of Sidney Blumenthal, a Clinton family confidant. Lazar copied Blumenthal's emails, including dozens of messages sent to Clinton, then Secretary of State. Many of Clinton's emails included detailed memos about international affairs.

Clinton's use of her personal email account for State Department business has grown into a scandal that political rivals have used to attack her. The FBI is investigating whether classified material was sent and stored via the unsecure system.
