President Hassan Rouhani paid his first trip to Europe after the lifting of the anti-Iranian sanctions and offered an olive branch to Italy and France by welcoming their companies to the vast Iranian market.

The trip has been both symbolic and substantial – the first, in the sense that Iran is reconnecting with its pre-sanctions partners, and the latter because of the billions of dollars of agreements that have been signed. Furthermore, it’s intriguing that the Iranian President didn’t visit Germany, traditionally understood as the EU’s leader, despite being literally right next door in France.

The once economically beleaguered country is now emerging as one of the number one investment hotspots in the world, ironically turning the tables on the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia’s prior efforts to isolate it, using no less than Western capital to power its future growth.

Andrei Fyodorov, Russia’s ex Deputy Foreign Minister and Director of the Centre for Political Studies think-tank (studio guest); Igor Pellicciari, Professor at the LUISS University (Rome) and Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Bologna; and Georges Malbrunot, political commentator, Le Figaro newspaper (Paris), shared their perspectives on our Man IN THE NEWS this week.
