German population increased in 2015 by 700,000 people, up to 81.9 million, the federal statistics agency said in a press release published Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the press release, the difference between births and deaths, or the birth deficit, is expected to have increased from 190,000 to 215,000 in 2015.

"According to an estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the population of Germany is expected to have increased in 2015 from nearly 81.2 million at the beginning of the year to at least 81.9 million people at year-end," the press release read.

The statistics agency cannot estimate at present to what extent those who came to Germany in 2015 seeking asylum have been taken into account.

Overall, the figures for 2015 are likely to represent only the expected minimum for both estimated net migration as well as the year-end population, the press release read.

According to the German Interior Ministry, over 1.1 million refugees arrived in the country in 2015.
