Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, a candidate at presidential elections in Portugal, leads with some 57 percent of voters after calculation of about 50 percent of votes, the official numbers published by Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

MADRID (Sputnik) — The second result is shown by the former head of University of Lisbon Sampaio da Novoa, who gains 19.67 percent of votes at the moment.

Polling Stations Close in Portugal Presidential Elections

According to the polls published on Friday, de Sousa, who was supported by the Portuguese Social Democratic Party, Democratic and Social Center – People's Party and the People's Monarchist Party was a frontrunner in the election.

The winning candidate is required to gain over 50 percent of the votes in the first round of voting. If elected in the fist round, the new head of state is expected to take office in late March.
