MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – On Thursday, Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said that asylum seekers arriving in the German region should first give their possessions in excess of 750 euros (some $810 at current exchange rates) to the authorities before they could receive a state support.
Similar measures exist in other European states. In Switzerland, migrants are obliged to hand over assets exceeding some $1,000 to local authorities, while Denmark is discussing provisions to permit confiscation of refugees' belongings to co-finance their presence in the country.
"Instead of taking away their usually small fortune, refugees should get the right to work from the outset, so they can contribute with their own merit to cover the cost of their livelihood," Ulla Jelpke, who represents Die Linke party in the Internal Affairs Committee of the Bundestag, said.
