DAVOS (Sputnik) — Last week, Iran freed four Iranian-American prisoners under a deal with the United States. Under the deal, the four prisoners will be exchanged for seven Iranian nationals serving their sentence at US jails, according to Prosecutor Abbas Jaafari.
Rezaian was detained in July 2014 in Iran’s capital. He was convicted of espionage in closed proceedings and held in Evin Prison in northwestern Tehran.
"That remains for the future," he said on the sidelines of World Economic Forum in Davos when asked if Tehran wanted to continue the process.
"This was a humanitarian issue. We were eager to have Iranians who, in our opinion, were unduly and unjustly imprisoned or prosecuted for economic activities. Now that we have come to this understanding that the sanctions are useless, we had to do our best for freedom and that was done. I hope these kinds of imprisonment don't happen in the future, but Iran always will do what it can on humanitarian aspects," Nahavandian said.
