A US interagency review board finally approved the release of a Guantanamo Bay detainee that had been held for 14 years without being charged, a US human rights group said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Until the PRB’s verdict, the release added, Hamdoun was among Guantanamo’s so-called "forever prisoners" who were slated for indefinite detention.

"Today, the Periodic Review Board (PRB) announced its decision to approve Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) client Zahir Hamdoun for transfer from Guantanamo," the release stated no Tuesday.

The PRB, an interagency body made up of senior US military and intelligence officials, decided to free Hamdoun because he showed a "credible desire to start a new life," and possessed a persistent record of compliance, according to the release.

At present, there are 93 men detained at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, 35 of whom are cleared for release, while most of the remainder are still uncharged and awaiting an appointment with the PRB.

In his 2016 State of the Union address earlier this month, President Barack Obama vowed to continue working to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center before leaving office.
