BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The European Commission expects that Kiev authorities will present shortly a report on implementation of the obligations for transition to a visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union, EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said Monday.

"Concerning Ukraine, there are still some commitments, given by the president and also by the prime minister to be fulfilled… We expect that we will receive very soon a report [on implementation of Kiev's obligations], and then we will have an assessment, and at the course of the first quarter we, I assume, will come with a proposal for visa liberalization," Hahn said ahead of the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.

Earlier in January, a high ranking EU diplomatic source told journalists that several members of the European Union were not ready to abolish visa regime with Ukraine because of Kiev-related corruption concerns.

Ukraine has long sought a visa-free regime with the European Union. The introduction of a visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens was stated to be a priority for the new authorities in Kiev, after former President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted in February 2014.

In March, 2014, the Ukraine–EU Association Agreement was ratified. The deal establishes a political and economic association between the parties, which are committed to cooperation and the convergence of their economic policies, legislation, and regulations across a broad range of areas, including a visa-free regime, the exchange of information by security services, the modernization of Ukraine's infrastructure, and access to the European Investment Bank.
