WHO Confirms New Ebola Case in Sierra Leone After Epidemic Declared Over
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed a new Ebola case in Sierra Leone in a statement on Friday, a day after declaring West Africa Ebola-free.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier on Friday, Sierra Leone health officials said a boy died from the virus in central Tonkolili district. Sierra Leone was declared free of the deadly disease in early November and was still in a 90-day period of enhanced surveillance.
"A new case of Ebola has been confirmed in Sierra Leone, reflecting the ongoing risk of new flare-ups of the virus in affected countries," the statement reads.

According to WHO, the Sierra Leone government acted rapidly in response to the case, while a joint team of local authorities and WHO commenced investigation to prevent further transmission.
The most recent Ebola outbreak began in December 2013, spreading across Western Africa from Guinea to Liberia and Sierra Leone, killing over 11,000 people in these three countries.
