MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The government stressed Moscow was a major energy partner for Sofia, as Bulgaria remains a major transit route for Russian gas supplies.

"At the session, Bulgaria will declare its interest in strengthening its relationship with Russia in the gas sector under mutually advantageous conditions," the government said, as quoted by the Bulgarian Novinite news agency.

According to the statement, the two countries will also discuss increase in Bulgarian export to Russia and development of tourist relations, as Russia ranked fourth by the number of tourists in Bulgaria between January and September 2015.

Sofia put forward the Varna gas hub project after Moscow canceled the South Stream gas pipeline, intended to traverse the Black Sea to deliver Russian natural gas through Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia to Italy and Austria, in late 2014.

The 15th Russian-Bulgarian intergovernmental commission meeting will be the first in five years.
