Disciplinary prison restrictions against Russian businessman Viktor Bout were lifted last week, Bout’s attorney Alexei Tarasov told Sputnik.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — "The restrictions were lifted at some point late last week," Tarasov said on Tuesday.

Since October 6, 2015, Bout was placed under prison sanctions for allegedly brewing tea in his prison cell that contained traces of alcohol, a claim that Tarasov denies.

Since October 6, 2015, US prison authorities placed Bout under sanctions for allegedly brewing tea in his cell that contained traces of alcohol — a claim that Tarasov denies.

The sanctions included cutting of the right to telephone calls and making purchases in the prison commissary.

"Viktor is now able to make contact with his family, and I presume that his ability to make purchases in the prison commissary has been restored as well," Tarasov added.

In 2011, the United States sentenced Bout to 25 years and housed him to serve the sentence at the medium-security prison in Marion, Illinois.

Bout was arrested in Bangkok in 2008 in a joint operation between Thai and US authorities, who accused him of conspiring to kill US soldiers by allegedly agreeing to supply Colombian militants with weapons.
