MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian and Iranian deputy foreign ministers discussed relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, as well as settlement of the Syrian crisis in a phone conversation on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Russia’s Mikhail Bogdanov and Iran’s Hossein Abdollahian "discussed a range of issues of the Syrian settlement… The situation unfolding in Yemen and the problematics of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia were also touched upon," the statement said.
Saudi Arabia broke off diplomatic ties with Iran as a response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in the country. The attacks were triggered by the execution of a prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr by Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia earlier in January.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting against numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
