Bad Cop, Better Cop: Russia Might Make a Better World Gendarme Than US
There are definite signs that the Cold War overtones that have underscored US-Russia relations are easing off, Earl Rasmussen, Vice-President of the Washington-based association of specialists working on European and Asian (Eurasian) affairs, told RIA Novosti.

‘Regardless of the current political situation, the American business is still tuned up for the positive relations with Russia. I think that the US businessmen are interested in the improvement of political relations and normalization of economic partnership between the two,” the agency quotes Rasmussen as saying.

The businessman regrets that political agendas nowadays prevail over economic growth and development; however he has noticed some signs of an easing-off in the US position towards Russia and a drive towards more serious cooperation.

Rasmussen is convinced that Russia will continue to develop regardless of the American sanctions, and pointed at Russia’s initiatives for the diversification of its national economy and at strengthening Russian role in such international institutions as BRICS, EurAsEC (EuroAsian Economic Community), and in the Middle East. He hopes it will play a positive role in the country’s long-term development.

However, the expert, who has been cooperating with Russia for over 20 years, pointed out that it is just his personal point of view.

Rasmussen also advised American business to seriously regard the possibility of joining Russia in the above projects.

He also noted that there is a clear division in the attitudes towards Russia among the US presidential candidates running for the top job. The results of the upcoming presidential elections could seriously influence the relationship between the two.

Thus, he noticed, that the Republicans Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, as well as Democrat Bernie Sanders admit that bilateral cooperation is needed for withstanding the countries' common challenges and threats, while a number of other presidential hopefuls, such as Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina and Chris Christie are quite hostile towards Russia.

He says their remarks regarding Russia and their perception of international security and stability are quite alarming.
