WASHINGTON (SPUTNIK) — US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Sara Sewall will participate in the first US-India Global Issues Forum since 2012 beginning on Monday, the US Department of State announced in a press release.

"She will meet with civil society representatives to strengthen cooperation around common interests, including countering violent extremism, religious freedom, trafficking in persons, and transparency and governance," the release said on Monday.

In a visit that lasts until Friday, Sewall also will visit Tibetan exiles in the Indian city of Dharamsala.

Founded in October 2002, the Global Issues Forum explores areas of cooperation between the United States and India.

US President Barack Obama was the chief guest at India’s 66th Republic Day celebrations last January.
