Residents of a central New York village will decide whether to keep a seal, which some deem offensive to Native Americans.

The seal in question appears to depict a white settler choking an Indian.

However, the village website states the image portrays a “friendly wrestling match” between village founder Hugh White and “an Oneida Indian of rather athletic form” during the 1900s.

The website adds that White’s victory won the goodwill of the Oneidas.

A vote on whether to keep the emblem is scheduled for Monday at the village office.
