Nearly 50 percent of German citizens back restricting a number of refugees received in the country to 200,000 a year, according to a Sunday poll.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Emnid Institute survey also revealed that 44 percent were against this restrictive measure, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper said.

Eastern Germany voiced the strongest support of limiting the refugee inflow with 58 percent of the surveyed backing the idea.

Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer said earlier in January that Germany could cope with no more than 200,000 refugee arrivals per year.

Germany is one of the top destinations for hundreds of thousands of refugees and immigrants coming to Europe from the Middle East and North Africa.
