The UN Security Council has convened for an emergency meeting after North Korea announced earlier on Wednesday that it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The emergency meeting was initiated by Japan, which became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on January 1.

Earlier in the day, North Korea claimed it had carried out its first test of a hydrogen bomb. The move triggered deep concern of the international community over the possible threat to both regional and global peace and security.
