MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Border patrol and rescue services are searching the coastline in west Turkey’s seaside town of Ayvalik, Reuters said.

The shipwreck occurred at around 5 a.m. local time (3:00GMT) when the boat was navigating the Aegean Sea toward the Greek island of Lesbos, regarded as the gateway into Europe.

Thousands of people have been trying to enter Europe escaping from violence in the war-torn Middle East and Africa.
