More than 22,000 people have been killed or injured as a result of acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq, United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said in a statement Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The statement underscores that the number of civilians killed over December totals 506 people, with 867 injured. The number of casualties among security forces during the period amounts to 474 killed and 377 injured.

"The total number of Civilian Casualties (killed and injured) for 2015 (including Police and including Anbar) in the entire 2015 was 22,370 (7,515 killed and 14,855 injured)," the statement posted on the UNAMI Facebook page said.

The situation in Iraq has been unstable in recent months, triggered primarily by the activity of Islamist militants.

The Islamic State militant group, which is outlawed in Russia and other countries, has taken over large parts in Iraq since 2014, declared a caliphate on the territories under its control and committed numerous human rights atrocities in the country.

Earlier this week, Iraq's army announced that it had regained full control over the strategically important Anbar province's capital Ramadi.
